Suicide Should Not Be Taken Lightly

Suicide, believe it or not, is actually in the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States. In fact, it is reported that suicide cases are on the rise, especially in people among the 15-24 years old age group.

According to Elizabeth Ucheoma-Cofield, M.D, she is appalled by the dramatic increase in suicide attempts. And what’s worse is that in most of these cases, the sufferer is successful in killing themselves.

The reality of it all is that about 42,000 Americans die each year due to suicide which means that there are 117 people actively killing themselves. That is why treatment, as well as guidance, is necessary for this day and age so that people won’t go and kill themselves.

Why are Suicide Cases on the Rise?

There are a lot of possible reasons why suicide cases are constantly on the rise in this day and age. One may attribute it to the fact that bullying now has many forms. There is bullying in school, but you can also now do it in the digital space as well.

For instance, if you frequently go to chat groups or community forums, you will find that there are trolls and cyber bullies that are quick to attack you in any way possible. This can range from shaming to outright calling you names and other derogatory terms.

That is also further compounded by the fact that there is really no more familial bond, at least, in many families in America. That is why people just resort to going to the internet to find friends, but they sometimes end up with people who have nefarious intents.

Aside from that, many people have access to the internet in more ways than one. Back in the day, people would have to use their bulky computers and laptops to do so, but with the advent of smartphones, going online is easier now more than ever.

This presents people with a lot of information at their grasp. That is why celebrity tragedies are often more emphasized and even exaggerated and some rabid fans would be so affected as well.

A famous example of this would be Robin William’s untimely passing. It was found out that the actor killed himself due to depression. He did so by hanging himself and shortly after his death, more people (possibly his fans) also killed themselves the same way their favorite actor did.

The Warning Signs

Fortunately, you can detect if a person is suicidal or not based on these early warning signs:

  • Feelings of low self-worth (can be due to some outside influences such as relationships, family issues, etc.)
  • Depression (monetary issues, having trouble keeping a partner due to problems due to the depression itself or often time problems in the bedroom (inability to last longer in bed due to mental status), etc.)
  • Decrease in Appetite
  • Susceptibility to Stress Eating
  • Increase in drug and alcohol intake
  • Sudden Mood Swings
  • Suicide ideations/talking about death

What You Can Do

If you suspect that there is a loved one that is thinking of killing themselves, you have to act quickly. Reassure them that you’re going to be there for them and that you can give them some outside perspective on the problems that they’re currently dealing with.

Furthermore, there are special support groups that aim to provide assistance and guidance to people who are contemplating suicide.

Remember, suicide can be prevented and there is always a way to solve your problems. Please, do not take your life because it is so precious and it is considered to be a gift from your maker.
